Learn how we rank top MLS and MLIS degree programs and schools
At MastersInLibraryScience.org, we take pride in providing accurate and thoughtful rankings to help you find the right program. We also realize that determining the “best” programs can be subjective. The best school for you depends on your unique needs and career goals. To guide you in your search, we evaluate library science programs using a range of important factors that reflect program quality and value.
Our rankings consider things like affordability, diversity, flexibility, and much more. Read on to learn more about how we develop our school and program rankings.
Methodology
Our rankings are based on a comprehensive and meticulous evaluation process designed to compile the most accurate and useful information about library science programs. To achieve this, we gathered data through various methods, including Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, to ensure transparency and reliability.
Once the data was collected, we built a database and excluded programs that:
- Lacked enrollment information in the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).
- Were closed or scheduled to close at the time of data collection.
Next, our team evaluated the database and applied a structured “points” system to rank programs based on the following factors:
- Acceptance and Completion Rates: Evaluating program accessibility and success rates.
- Flexibility: Determining if the program has online or hybrid options available.
- Cost and Affordability: Considering annual tuition and program costs relative to local cost of living.
- Accreditation Status: Prioritizing programs with recognized accreditations.
- Institutional Competitiveness: Factoring in the overall reputation of the school.
- Program Diversity: Highlighting a variety of specializations and learning options.
- School and Department Size: Assessing resources and faculty-to-student ratios.
- Faculty Expertise: Taking into account the years of experience and tenure of program faculty.
This method ensures our rankings reflect the most important elements of quality, affordability, and program success, helping prospective students make informed decisions about their education.
